How to Install 316 Marine Grade Deck Screws?

Proper installation techniques are important to have a secure and durable result. Here is a step-by-step guide to installing 316 marine grade deck screws:

Screw Length
Choose the appropriate screw size and type based on your project requirements. The general rule of thumb is for the screw to be three times the length of the material thickness being fastened. So 1" thick decking will be best fixed with a 3" long screw.

Select the Right Tools
Use a screwdriver or drill with adjustable torque settings to prevent overtightening and damage to the screws or materials.

Consider using a countersink bit to create a recessed hole for a flush screw head.

An impact driver is an invaluable tool, and we recommend using one if possible.

Remember, always buy the best tools you can afford!

Should I Predrill?
In most cases, pre-drilling is recommended to prevent wood splitting, especially on the ends of the planks.

There are two aspects to consider in the pre-drilling process:  The clearance hole, and the pilot hole.

The clearance hole should only be drilled through the component which the head of the screw will tighten against, and the diameter is to be slightly larger than the screw's thread diameter.

If screwing into softwood such as Pine, generally it is not necessary to drill a pilot hole for the thread.

Inspect the installation
Check that all screws are flush with the material's surface and securely fastened.
