Yes, stainless steel screws, particularly 304 and 316 grades, are suitable for use with pressure-treated wood. In fact, stainless steel is one of the most highly recommended screw materials for treated wood.

Do I need to pre-drill holes for stainless steel decking screws?

Yes, we recommend pre-drilling, especially in hardwoods, to prevent splitting. The Starborn countersinking bit is a highly rated tool that we can recommend for drilling the pilot holes.

What length of screw do I need?

The general rule of thumb for selecting screws lengths: The length should be approximately three times the thickness of the timber being fastened to the substructure or framing. So, the correct length screw to use when fixing a 1” deck board is 3”.

Can stainless steel screws be used near saltwater?

Yes, 316 marine grade stainless steel is especially suitable for areas with exposure to saltwater, making it a good choice for floating docks, marinas, decks and furniture in areas where the sea breeze blows. 316 grade is also resistant to chemicals which makes it perfect for pool decks as chlorine spills will not cause any corrosion.
